The best mountain tea grows close to the mountain top.
To keep its qualities intact, we cultivate it with the minimum
intervention possible, consulting agricultural scientists
and we harvest it by hand in an altitude of over 1700m.
All our care isn’t enough to make a mountain tea so special.
What makes it so special is the mountain where it grows,
the legendary Taygetos.

The Herb
The main product of Taygetos Herbs is organic
Greek mountain tea also known as “Sideritis”,
a plant that has been growing naturally in the Greek
mountains for centuries. A subspecies called
Sideritis Clandestina is endemic in the Peloponnesian
mountain of Taygetus in altitudes over 1000m.

The Mountain
The name Taygetus is one of the oldest recorded in Europe,
appearing even in the Odyssey. The region around Taygetus
has been inhabited at least since 1500BC. The mountain was
a natural fortress for the ancient city of Sparta. Its highest
peak reaches 2400m. Our Sideritis Clandestina is a bio –
organic product and it is cultivated at an altitude of over 1600m.

The region is part of the Natura 2000. Mount Taygetos has
also been proposed as a candidate National Park of Greece, as
it is a protected area with rare species of plants and animals,
while its landscapes and ecosystems are fascinating.

The Reality
Sideritis is beneficial to almost everything!
It is a natural antioxidant and boosts the immune
system, known also for lowering blood pressure,
protecting the digestive system and the heart.
It also has positive effects on anxiety and depression,
used since the times of Hippocrates.

The Myth
In Greek, “sideritis” can be literally translated as
“he who is made of iron”. In ancient times, “sideritis”
was a generic reference for plants capable of
healing wounds caused by iron weapons during
battles. It was very popular amongst Spartan
warriors during the Peloponnesian War (5th century
BC) as well as a part of their nutritious diet.

The Tradition
The site where we cultivate our sideritis is called
Kontovounia. Its name can be translated as “short
mountains”, however it is located in an altitude the
policy of minimum intervention. The herb’s flower
is hand picked and selected, without machines and without
uprooting the plants
. They are then slowly and naturally
dried in our facilities located in the site and then they
are transferred down the mountain on donkeys.

The Innovation
By “minimum intervention” we do not mean that we let things happen by chance.
On the contrary, to minimize our presence on the fields,we use remote cultivation
methods based on state of he art technology. Ground sensors test the quality of
the soil, a weather station keeps us informed about the climate conditions and
high-resolution cameras allow the agronomists and researchers we collaborate
with, to observe with maximum accuracy the plants’ progress in order to prevent
diseases.
We consult with specialized agricultural scientists from the Pharmaceutics
department of the National University of Athens, the Agronomist department,
the Technological Educational Institute of the Peloponnese and the “Demokritos”
National Center for Scientific Research, the Greek Agricultural Organisation
ELGO-Dimitra of Kalamata.

The Team
We are three friends and partners with one vision:
we want to showcase the magic of Taygetos using
our scientific and rural background. This mountain
is full of treasures waiting to be explored.
We started with the most precious!
